Body-Safe Sex Toy Materials Explained
Material affects how a pleasure product feels, how it should be cleaned and which lubricants are suitable. Understanding the practical differences helps you choose and care for toys confidently.
Non-porous and porous materials
Non-porous surfaces are easier to clean thoroughly when undamaged. Common examples include quality silicone, ABS plastic, stainless steel and borosilicate glass. Porous materials can retain moisture or residue and require more cautious care and storage.
Silicone
Silicone can be soft, flexible and smooth. Water-based lubricant is the simplest compatible option. Some silicone lubricants can affect some silicone products, so follow the manufacturer’s guidance.
ABS plastic
ABS is firm and lightweight. It is commonly used for handles, controls and hard-bodied toys. Never immerse a product unless its water-resistance rating allows it.
Stainless steel and glass
Both are smooth, firm and non-porous when made for intimate use. Inspect glass for chips or cracks. Avoid extreme temperatures and choose a flared base for anything used anally.
TPE, TPR and soft materials
These can feel soft and realistic but may be more porous. Clean as directed, dry fully and store away from other toys because some materials react during prolonged contact.
